Preschool Tells Kids Not to Use the Term 'Best Friend'

A Massachusetts family is now looking for a new preschool after their child was told not to use a popular term between friends.

Georgetown, MA (WLTX) - A family in Georgetown, Massachusetts is looking for a new preschool after they say their 4-year-old daughter was told not to use the term "best friend" at school.

According to preschooler Julia Hartwell's mother, Christine, Julia appeared sad recently when she came home from her preschool in Georgetown.

Julia told her mother she was upset because her teacher told her that she couldn't call one of her classmates her "best friend."

School officials later sent a letter to the Hartwell family, saying it had been their experience that the use of the term "best friend," even when used in a loving way, can lead to some children feeling excluded.

The school also said that they encourage children to have a broader group of friends, fostering inclusion at their particular age.
