Kershaw County, SC (WLTX) - Kershaw County deputies delivered turkeys, stuffing and more to families who may need a little extra help putting a meal on the table for Thanksgiving.

“I hope it definitely reaches their soul. I hope they're extremely happy about it and it helps them out and gives them a little relief during this Thanksgiving season,” Deputy Joshua Woodley.

Woodley and five other deputies spent their day off handing out the food.

“It felt real good,” Lugoff Resident Valveta Portee explained.

Portee is a single mom and says she's so thankful for the food.

“It means that there's always somebody out there thinking about other people on this holiday,” Portee said.

Woodley says he's just happy to help.

“Just the excitement I see in these families and the idea they see the sheriff's department we do care about them,” Woodley said. “We are here to help them, the common nomenclature for a law enforcement agency is to serve and protect and this is our way of serving."

This was the first time the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office handed out Thanksgiving meals.

All the food was donated by churches and private donors. The deputies provided Thanksgiving dinner to 50 families in Kershaw County.
