Cars Struck by Falling Objects on I-26 in Lexington County

It's the second time in the last week that vehicles have been damaged along a stretch of Interstate 26 in Lexington County.

Lexington County deputies say they're investigating after getting reports that cars have been struck by what appears to be rocks while riding down Interstate 26.

Officers say late Sunday night, they got four reports of cars being hit by objects while riding in the westbound lanes of I-26 near the Old Wire Road overpass. That's in an area about two miles before the split between I-26 and I-77.

“Fortunately, nobody was seriously hurt but several vehicles were damaged," Sheriff Jay Koon said. "One person was transported with minor injuries caused by broken glass.”

The sheriff says windshield were damaged and several large rocks were found along the interstate.

Deputies say several vehicles were struck in the same area a couple of weeks ago, when rocks were thrown at vehicles traveling on I-26 near the 117 mile marker.

One car was damaged last Thursday night while traveling west on another stretch of I-26. A passenger told deputies a brick struck the windshield as the car traveled under the Piney Grove Road overpass.

And earlier this month, Columbia police got a report of objects being thrown from an overpass at the Colonial Life Boulevard exit on Interstate 126.
