Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal crash that killed a University of South Carolina student.

Charles Davenport Jr., 24, is charged with felony DUI involving death. He was released from the hospital Monday, then immediately booked at the Richland County jail.

According to police, Davenport's truck struck a moped driven by 22-year-old David Newell back on November 15. The collision happened along Rosewood Drive.

Newell was taken to the hospital, and died two days later.

According to police, Davenport was under the influence of alcohol and was speeding when he hit Newell’s moped from behind. The impact caused the two vehicles to strike a tree.

Friends confirmed to News19 Newell attended USC.

Davenport is set to have his first court appearance Tuesday.
