Lexington, SC (WLTX) - Over a dozen businesses in the Town of Lexington were handed hake money in just the last two months.
Cameron Mortenson, the spokesperson for Lexington Police Department, says grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants were all targeted.
Fake $20, $50 and $100 bills were being used to buy cheap items and then get real money as change.
Frank's Carwash received three $50 counterfeit bills on Friday and Saturday of last week. Owner Mike Hutchins says the bills passed the marker test, but they felt different. "You can't tell by looking at it," he said. "The marker said they were okay but if you look closely they both have the same number."
Hutchins says it was three different customers in three different cars. "It wasn't the same car it wasn't the same driver, it was male or female all the time," he said.
Police are now looking for two suspects in connection to the counterfeit money in the Town of Lexington. If you have any information, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
