Investigators have released new information regarding a shooting incident where a man was found with several gunshot wounds laying outside a home.
Officers from the Lexington Police Department say Derek Fogle was had been shot several times in the Cherokee Village neighborhood. Fogle lived a few blocks down from where the incident happened at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning.
Investigators say they contacted the man who told officers that he shot Fogle after an attack outside his home. They say Fogle approached Joseph Nicewonger's residence yelling and chasing him from his garage. Fogle caught up with Nicewonger and through him to the ground and hit him several times in the head. Nicewonger told officers he called 9-1-1 after he shot Fogle several times to end the fight. Officers say Nicewonger stood by in his yard until officers arrived and has been cooperative during the investigation.
Detectives say Fogle may have experienced an altered mental state just before the incident. Just before his confrontation with Nicewonger, he physically attacked his roommate. Witnesses say they saw Fogle yelling, knocking on doors and walking through other people's yards right before the shooting.
Officers say more information will be available after the toxicology report is released. The Lexington County Coroner's Office and SLED are working with the Lexington Police Department on this case.
