14-year-old Student, Basketball Player at Local High School Killed

A 14-year-old boy was killed in a shooting on St. Andrews Road Sunday morning, according to officials.

A 14-year-old boy was killed in a shooting on St. Andrews Road Sunday morning, according to officials.

Tiquan Taylor, 14, of Irmo died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to Richland County coroner Gary Watts.

Taylor was a student who at Gray Collegiate Academy who was a freshman on the junior varsity basketball team.

The varsity team will play Carver Bay on Friday for the 2A state title in the CLA. They are dedicating the game to Tiquan.

South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley tweeted about Taylor's death.

"Godspeed to Tiquan Taylor, his family and his Gray Collegiate family," Staley wrote. "Here for you Dion [Bethea, the team's coach]. Life is incredibly precious thing."

Deputies say they responded to a shooting in the 1500 block of St Andrews Road Sunday. In addition to Taylor, another victim was shot and taken to the hospital.
