Prison Officer Tried to Bring Banned Items to SC Inmates, Investigators Say

An officer with the South Carolina Department of Corrections is being accused of trying to contraband into a prison.

Bishopville, SC (WLTX) - An officer with the South Carolina Department of Corrections is being accused of trying to contraband into a prison.

James O'Neal, 50, is facing several charges, including misconduct in office.

A spokesperson for the South Carolina Department of Corrections says they arrested O'Neal Tuesday for trying to bring the illegal items inside the Lee Correctional facility in Bishopville.

For years, Lee and other prisons have had problems with people on the outside bringing items to prisoners, including cell phones. Earlier this month, an inmate escaped from the Lieber Correctional facility in Dorchester County, in part by using illegal items he secured by calling people from a banned cell phone in the jail. Officers say they also think some of the items used in the escape were brought to the jail with a drone.
