Search ends for suspect in southeast Columbia

A perimeter was established, but deputies say the search was unsuccessful.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — **EDITOR'S NOTE: Preliminary information provided from authorities was that the suspect vehicle was reported as stolen. That was incorrect; the license plate was suspended.

Richland County Deputies say they have ended a search for a suspect in the southeast Columbia area, off Garners Ferry Road.

While details are limited, deputies say the search began as an attempt to stop a vehicle with a suspended license plate around 8:45 p.m Monday near the intersection of Garners Ferry Road and Interstate 77.

The deputy attempted to make a stop, but the driver took off. Deputies say a short chase ensued before it ended at Clifton and Drake Streets.

Deputies say the suspect then fled on foot into the wood line. A perimeter was established, but the search was unsuccessful.

Columbia police assisted with the pursuit and search efforts.
