South Carolina man gets 20 years in prison for trying to help ISIS

Zakaryia Abdin, of Ladson, was arrested at Charleston's airport in March 2017 as he tried to board a plane for Jordan.

Columbia, SC - A South Carolina man who pleaded guilty to trying to fight for the Islamic State group has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

A federal judge in Charleston handed down the sentence for 20-year-old Zakaryia Abdin this week. Abdin pleaded guilty in August to attempting to provide material support to ISIS.

Abdin, of Ladson, was arrested at Charleston's airport in March 2017 as he tried to board a plane for Jordan.

Authorities say that he told an undercover agent posing as an Islamic State recruiter that he wanted to torture an American and would attack a U.S. site if he couldn't get out of the country.

He has been jailed since his arrest on a charge of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, the notorious terrorist organization. He pled guilty to that charge Wednesday, and is now facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

In June 2017, prosecutors began seeking additional charges.
