A Sumter man is in the hospital with gunshot wounds after men broke into his home and demanded money, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say they responded to a report of a gunshot wound around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The victim told deputies he was home with his 7-year-old when two men kicked in the door and demanded money. Deputies say when the resident then sat down on the couch and was shot before the men fled.

The resident said he was able to make his way to a neighbor's house and was taken to the hospital.

The resident is currently undergoing surgery and his condition is unknown, deputies say.

Investigators are still on the scene and working to find the suspects.
