Deputies say Andre Heatley Jr., 22, was charged with murder and armed robbery in connection with the death. He was arrested Saturday morning after he was located on Broad River Road.

According to authorities, Heatley is the ex-boyfriend of the victim and was captured on surveillance video using her debit card at three locations after the killing.

A report by the Violence Policy Center ranked South Carolina the worst state in the nation for women killed by men.

News 19 spoke with Lieutenant Curtis Wilson with the Richland County Sheriff's Department who said, "It could be from growing up - a learned behavior. It could be because of alcoholism. It could be financial issues. It could also be because of insecurities. There's so many different things that we could look into that says this is what causes CDV, but it's something that when we find this cause; how to treat it and also work with it, so we don't have this issue here in South Carolina."

Deputies said they are now looking to find where Heatley obtained the gun, whether he was acting alone or with someone else and whether anyone else knew he was going to commit the crime.

Chandra Cleveland-Jennings is a victim's advocate. She said it's another life lost to domestic violence.

"It is real. It is very real with those relationships," Jennings said. "A lot of women do not know the steps in order to take to get out of that violent relationship."

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Jennings said teenagers need to be aware of the signs of domestic violence.

"It's happening with you girls also. How to understand the signs. How to deal with the signs and who to reach out to for help."

She said if you are a victim of domestic violence or know someone who is to call the authorities immediately.

Sheriff Leon Lott will hold a press conference on Monday to share more details on this murder as the investigation continues.
