Columbia, SC (WLTX) - If you were hoping to get free eclipse glasses from a Richland County library, unfortunately you're out of luck.
The library announced around 11 a.m. Friday that they had given out their supply of about 12,000 pairs that they had. Over the last several months, the library has given out 32,000 glasses.
Long lines greeted people who came to Richland County libraries looking for the solar eclipse glasses.
People came out to all of the branches, which were offering the glasses for free. The line at the main location on Assembly Street had a line that went all through the first floor of the building, outside the door, and down the nearby sidewalk.
Similar lines were experience at their locations from Ballentine to Blythewood, and Eastover.
The eclipse glasses are now one of the most desired items in the area, as peole try to get ready for the big event. Remember--you cannot look at the eclipse without the glasses, except for a narrow window when the eclipse is in full totality. Failure to do that could lead to serious eye damage.
You also must make sure that the glasses you get are from a NASA-approved manufacturer. For more details on that information, go to the NASA Eclipse Glasses Webpage.
