Authorities have identified the teenager recovered from Lake Carolina Wednesday morning, following unsuccessful search and rescue efforts Tuesday evening.
Elias Pierre of Deer, 15, of Columbia died from asphyxia due to fresh water drowning, according to Richland County coroner Gary Watts.
Officials say the Columbia Fire Department and Richland County EMS were dispatched to a water rescue on Lake Carolina at the bridge on Lake Carolina Boulevard at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. As they arrived, witnesses reported seeing Pierre in distress in the water, according to the Columbia Fire Department (CFD).
Firefighters say divers from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) assisted in the search in the area near the bridge. As crews began to discontinue their search for the night due to safety reasons, divers discovered the Pierre, according to CFD.
