Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Three people are dead following a wrong-way collision on Interstate 77 near Columbia Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened around 5:40 p..m. near mile marker 23, which is near the Killian Road exit. State troopers say a Ford Escape traveling in the southbound lane crossed the median, striking a Toyota headed north.

The three people inside the Ford Escape all died, while the driver in the Toyota was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Another car was also struck by debris from the accident, but no one in that vehicle was injured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
