Charleston, SC (WLTX/WSOC) - Video taken from a news helicopter shows the extent of the traffic slowdown caused by the tens of thousands of people evacuating the coast in advance of Hurricane Matthew.

Chopper video showed bumper to bumper traffic for miles in a stretch of Interstate 26 near Charleston. The highway is the main route that people fleeing the coast are using to get to the center of the state and beyond.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley gave an evacuation order to the much of South Carolina's coastal community Tuesday. People in the Charleston and Beaufort County regions were asked to leave Wednesday, while people in the Georgetown and Horry County regions are asked to pick up their things and move out Friday.

Matthew is still hundreds of miles away in the Atlantic, but most computer models have it making some kind of impact along the coast, and even as far in as the Midlands.
