Charleston, SC (WLTX) - There are questions around whether or not the man accused of shooting and killing nine people at Emanuel AME last year is fit to stand trial.

The competency hearing for Dylann Roof began Monday morning and will continue Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.

The hearing is closed and no details about what’s been discussed so far have been released.

Jury selection for Roof’s federal death penalty trial was supposed to start November 7.

On that day, Judge Richard Gergel said he needed to have a closed hearing with the defendant and his attorneys.

From that point on, jury selection has continued to be pushed back as Roof’s competency to stand trial was in question.

Roof has been evaluated by a court appointed examiner and now those results are being discussed in these closed hearings.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Governor Nikki Haley will be attending a prayer service at Emanuel AME Tuesday at noon.
