Consumer Reports: Poisonous Chemicals Found In Some Baby Food

A study done by Consumer Reports shows nearly 50 nationally distributed baby food packages were checked for cadmium, inorganic arsenic and lead.

Columbia, SC - (WLTX) A study done by Consumer Reports shows nearly 50 nationally distributed baby foods were checked for cadmium, inorganic arsenic and lead.

It turned out that nearly 68 percent had worrisome levels of at least 1 heavy metal.

The products fall into four categories, baby cereals, packaged fruits and vegetables, packaged entrees and packaged snacks.

Maru Roper is a grandmother of a 1-year-old baby boy and she said she was devastated to find out about toxic metals found in baby food brands she has purchased. Roper says, "It's a concern because you want to give your child the best food possible. It's devastating when you find out you've been feeding your child this lead product what do you do?

News 19 went to Dr. Gail Washington whose a general family medicine physician to ask about the next steps. Washington says, "What I would suggest you should do is even if your not seeing any symptoms and even though it could seem that the child is normal but if you are concerned I would take the child to there pediatrician and tell them your concerns. A lot of times we can do blood test to detect and see the levels of the elements in the blood and if it's at a toxic range we have to do something different."
