Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have released pictures of the truck involved in a fatal crash that took the life of an Eau Claire High School student.
Officers released the images Thursday related to the November 21 incident.
According to deputies, 17-year-old Cameron Scott was a backseat passenger in a car that driving along Farrow Road near Bendale Drive. Police say a black pickup truck with at least two males in the truck bed pulled up near them and fired multiple gunshots at their vehicle.
None of the bullets struck the people inside, but the the shooting caused the driver to lose control of his car as he tried to get away from the gunfire, and the vehicle crashed along the side of the road.
The suspect vehicle then drove away from the scene.
Scott died at the scene. The three other people in the car with him were taken to the hospital for treatment. All of them are still receiving treatment.
The gun involved in the shooting came from a .45 caliber handgun, investigators say, based on shell casing collected at the scene.
“My mind is left wide open. How? Why? I take it one day at a time, that’s all I can do," Cameron's mother, Carolyn Scott, told the Columbia Police Department.
Police say she told them she and her husband moved with their son to Columbia to escape violence in Cleveland, Ohio.
“I thought his chances would be better here," she told CPD. "He had options and now he doesn’t. I can now only speak on my son’s behalf."
“He (Cameron) was not confrontational," she added. "I cannot imagine someone running up on him and this would be the outcome. I don’t think Cameron was the target.”
Her son's funeral is set for Saturday.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation. Anyone who recognizes the vehicle, or has any information related to the case, should contact Crimestoppers in any of the following ways:
