Columbia, SC (WLTX) – The Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Garners Ferry Road is getting a huge facelift.
Over the next five years, the VA is receiving more than $80 million for renovations and new buildings.
You will see a new prosthetics and sensory aid center, a new rehab center and a new behavioral health center over the next three years.
Additionally, there will be a new police and security services building, a new parking garage and a new eye clinic.
They are also in the process of planning for a Fisher House which is a home away home for veterans’ families when they are visiting their loved ones getting treatment at the hospital.
Renovations include turning the historic building 10 into a primary care clinic and the surgical intensive care unit in the main hospital.
“The main thing it’s going to help with is better access to their healthcare,” Projects Chief Chris Zell explained. “With our veteran population growing, there’s a need for more facilities and better access.”
He said the improvements should reduce wait times for patients and give them modern and state of the art facilities.
The Dorn VA currently serves 82,000 veterans and with all of the new additions that will be able to serve almost 3,000 more.
Officials say they hope to have all the projects complete in less than 10 years.
