Charleston, SC (WLTX) - The lawyer for the ex-police officer charged with killing an unarmed man in South Carolina last year wants his trial moved to a new city.

Michael Slager's attorney filed a motion in court Tuesday asking for a change of venue in the case.

Slager is accused of shooting and killing Scott following a traffic stop in April of 2015. At the time, Slager was working as an officer for the North Charleston Police Department, but was fired after he was charged with murder.

Slager and his attorneys have maintained the former officer feared for his life when he killed Scott. One of the key pieces of evidence in the trial will likely be a a cell phone video that showed Scott running away from Slager when the fatal shots were fired. That video was shown both nationwide and across the globe.

Slager's trial is set to begin on October 31. The jury in the case has already been selected.
