Former South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Les Tindal has died at the age of 89.
Tindal died at his home on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, according to Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. He was predeceased by his wife, the late May Davis Tindal.
Born May 4, 1928, in Pinewood, Tindal was a son of the late David Leslie Tindal, Sr. and the late Lela Norris Tindal. The Pinewood native and Furman University graduate began farming in 1949, planting cotton, corn, soybeans, grains, oats and wheat.
Tindal was elected Commissioner of Agriculture in 1982, where he served for for 20 years, until his retirement in 2002. First elected as a democrat, he switched parties during his third term in office. Tindal's tenure is remembered for beginning work on the Pee Dee Farmer’s Market and helping bring the kiwi fruit to the state, among other things.
He is survived by three daughters, Betsy T. Ducworth (John) of Summerton, Amelia T. Handegan (John Roven) of Charleston and Ginger Tindal Rhodes of Summerton; one son, David L. Tindal III (Nancy) of Pinewood; eight grandchildren, John W. Ducworth III, Elizabeth D. Thompson, Tindal D. Handegan, Jack D. Handegan III, Thomas L. Rhodes III, Austin T. Rhodes, Rebecca T. Thompson and David L. Tindal IV; seven great grandchildren, May, William, Lee, Quinn, Braxton, Virginia and David; and a sister, Henrietta T. “Hennie” Rickenbaker of Summerton.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 30, 2017, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John W. Ducworth III, Tindal D. Handegan, Thomas L. Rhodes III, Austin T. Rhodes, David L. Tindal IV and Jack D. Handegan III.
Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, Billy Davis, Bob Davis, Skip Davis, Fritz Davis, Francis Davis, Bill Davis, Connor Davis, David Cahill, Rick Rickenbaker, Burchell Rickenbaker and long-time employees, Vernell Durant and Leroy Moore.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the residence, 1322 Les Tindal Road in Pinewood.
