Columbia, SC (WLTX) - One of Columbia's historic buildings will be getting a new purpose soon.
The old Columbia Central fire station will be turning into a retail, residential, restaurant, office, and event space in the Vista. Wheeler Developer and Colliers International has partnered together for the project.
Sterling Bird has lived in Columbia for nearly twenty years and says he's seen the Vista transform.
"It's changed quite a bit. I've driven past the fire training tower here and obviously it looked like it hasn't been in use for quite some time," said Bird.
The fire tower and the rest of the old building has been off and Senate and Park Street since the 1950s but it's been out of commission since 1995.
The thirty-five thousand square foot property will maintain a lot of its historical character according to Colliers International. They plan on adding a rooftop area to the building.
Bird thinks it's great to see the old buildings turning into something new.
"I think it's always nice to use something and repurpose and preserve it when it makes sense and preserve it for generations to come. It's an excellent location. It still looks like it's in very good condition so I think this is a plus for the city for the near future," said Bird.
As of Friday, it has not be mentioned on when the project will be completed.
