Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Interstate 77 in Columbia is having a slowdown for much of the next day due to an emergency lane closure.
The problem is in the southbound lanes between the Two Notch Road exit and where I-77 and I-20 connect.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation says they're having to close the right travel lane and shoulder lane due to a problem that was discovered Friday morning.
SCDOT was already doing work in that area, and had shifted traffic to the outside shoulder. However, they determined that the ground under the pavement on the shoulder was too soft, and the pavement failed.
The new closure went into effect around noon. The contractor will replace a 1,200-foot section of the outside lane and shoulder. The inside travel lane will remain open.
Drivers should expect a slowdown, and may want to consider another travel route.
The repair work should be done by 8 a.m.
