Inmates Briefly Held Officer Hostage at Maximum Security SC Prison

The incident happened Friday night at the maximum security prison.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections says inmates overpowered an officer and held him hostage for over an hour at a maximum security prison Friday night.

The prisons agency updated the situation late Friday night, saying Lee Correctional Institution was now 'secure' again.

The agency says around 6:50 p.m., the inmates grabbed the guard and took control of one side of a dorm at the Lee.

The officer was held against that person's will for 1 hour and 25 minutes, the agency says.

The SCDC said earlier in the evening that their Special Response Team had been sent to the prison, along with State Law Enforcement Division agents. Eventually, they were able to get the officer released.

The officer was seen by medical staff and released to go home. The dorm did not have any damage and no inmates were injured.

The agency says there was never a safety threat to the public. The incident remains under investigation.

About 92 inmates are housed in that dorm, according to SCDC.

The prison is located in the town of Bishopville in Lee County, and is a Level 3 facility, meaning it houses some of the most violent offenders in the South Carolina prison system.

An inmate killed another inmate at the facility in late February of this year.
