Irate, Angry Tri-County Electric Customers Demand Resignations From Board Members

St Matthews, SC (WLTX) - Tensions were high as hundreds gathered at a meeting asking members of the Tri-County Electric board to resign after allegations of financial mistreatment have circulated.

One of those accusations came from residents who went to the meeting on Thursday and today say board members were calling unnecessary meetings, getting them $450 every time there was one.

Hundreds of folks showed up to the community meeting on Friday that was set to begin at 2 pm.

After 30 minutes had passed and no board members came out, folks started chanting for board members to come out.

The Tri-County Electric Cooperative group plans on holding a vote Saturday to remove board members.

Eventually the media and a small group of the members of the Cooperative along with Representatives Russell Ott and Wendy Brawley came inside the conference room.

“The employees, the customers, everybody has been through enough,” said Representative Ott. “Those folks out there have rights too.”

“I don’t agree with your characterization that tomorrow’s meeting is legal,” said the lawyer for board members.

Representative Brawley chimed in, “To deny them that opportunity to have this vote tomorrow, that’s not going to happen. They’re going to vote and if you have to go to court to resolve whatever needs to be resolved that’s within your purview, but there’s nothing that you can do to stop the vote.”

“If you don’t walk in that room, you have solidified the character that you truly have over the past few months and the past few years. You are solidifying your public image and your character of no care to the members of this (cooperative group). Simple as that if you don’t walk into that room and give people a chance to ask you and see your faces,” said another member of the Tri-County Electric Cooperative group.

A temporary restraining order was issued to the members of the board by attorney David Black who represents the Cooperative. This means that the board cannot fire members of the cooperative group or the CEO.

There will be a meeting on Saturday where members of the Tri-County Electric Cooperative group may vote out members of the board.
