Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Fishing has been big business for parts of the Midlands with the Major League Fishing (MLF) tournament taking place on Lake Murray. The anglers have been on the lake all week filming for the Challenge Select for the Outdoor Channel.

"Major League Fishing being out here is awesome," said Bruce Andrews, an avid fisher from Sumter.

Andrews says the MLF tournament being filmed on Lake Murray is great for the fishing community.

"It'll bring a lot more fishermen into the competitions," Andrews said.

Aly Akers with MLF says they often see a spike in tourism after a tournament airs.

"We really see that rise in tourism because they want to go where these pros have been and get to maybe catch the same fish they did," Akers said.

It's not just the tourism, though. Bailey McBride with MLF says it's also an economic booster.

"There are the hundred heads in beads from our production crews, all of our anglers and all of their families that get to come out, all of those people eating in your restaurants, visiting your attractions and everything else," McBride said.

"To the zoo, to Edventure, to the South Congaree, to Congaree National Park," said Richland County Councilman Bill Malinowski.

Malinowski says it also puts Lake Murray on the map.

"People will see what a jewel we have here in Lake Murray and be able to for themselves come and experience it," Malinowski said.

The episodes of the tournament shot here will air on the Outdoor Channel in March of 2018.
