Lexington County, SC (WLTX) - Lexington County deputies are charging a man after a bizarre sequence of events that saw the man get shot in self-defense, then carjack a woman's pickup truck.

Officers say Mark Emil Day, 27, is charged with four counts of assault and battery and two counts of carjacking.

The incident all took place Sunday afternoon near Chapin.

“Based on victim and witness statements we gathered at the scene, a man shot Day in self-defense as Day was threatening him and three other people with a pressure washer wand at a home on Millers Branch Road,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “Day ran away after being shot and eventually two passersby in a truck stopped to check on him as he walked down Meadowlark Road.”

Deputies say Day then opened the front passenger door, punched a woman who was sitting inside, and pulled her out of the truck. He then pushed the driver out of the truck and drove off, according to Koon.

Day, however, crashed the truck a short time later in the 800 block of Westwoods Drive.

The suspect was taken to the hospital where he received treatment for non life-threatening injuries.
