Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- It will be hot and humid Monday with a chance of showers and storms during the afternoon and evening hours.

The hot and muggy weather continued over the weekend. High temperatures Saturday and Sunday were in the middle 90s. Heat index values climbed into the 100s again. Sunday afternoon Columbia's heat index hit at least 108 degrees.

We have been on the western edge of high pressure located over the Atlantic. This has lead to hot and humid conditions over the last several days. Even though it has been hot, we still have not hit 100° in Columbia this season.

One reason we have not seen the century mark has been the high moisture content of the air. Usually the air is drier when we reach 100 degrees. The weather pattern and abundant rains have made it more difficult to reach 100 degrees.

It will still be hot and humid both Monday and Tuesday. High temperatures will be in the lower to middle 90s. There will be a chance for thunderstorms both days. The storms that do develop could produce heavy rainfall and damaging winds.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected by Wednesday with highs near 90. The chance for rain will decrease towards the end of the week with high temperatures building into the lower to middle 90s.

More unsettled weather is expected for the weekend. Scattered showers and storms will be possible both Saturday and Sunday. High temperatures will be in the upper 80s.
