Scams about debt collection and sweepstakes are among the hundreds of scams reported to the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA), since the start of the year. That's according to the department's latest scam report, released today.
Since January 1, 2017, the consumer protection agency says its Identity Theft Unit has taken in reports of more than 750 scams. In all, those scams reportedly cost consumers more than $750,000 in actual losses. Consumer experts say the majority of the reports (46%) were about imposter scams. Calls about debt collection and sweepstakes also topped the list.
SCDCA says scam reporting is an important step in helping SCDCA empower consumers to recognize and avoid scams. To report a scam, file a complaint or get information on consumer issues, you can call (800) 922-1594 or visit the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs website.
