Neighborhood on Edge After Police Say Teen Shot Woman

News19 was able to speak with the daughter of the victim and she said that she's doing okay at this time and is in stable condition at the hospital.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - One neighborhood in Columbia is on edge after police say a teen shot a 55-year-old woman.

The Columbia Police Department say Jaleel Brown fired several shots at a 55-year-old woman outside a residence on the 600 block of Easter Street shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday.

A neighbor who didn't want to be on camera is concerned after deputies say a shooting happened down the road from the place she calls home.

"For this accident happen and to happen so close to me, it's kind of got me scared. When I was going in my backyard looking, I was just turning around looking and wondering if someone was going to start shooting or is someone going to run up in my yard. That's bad,” said the neighbor.

Law enforcement says the incident took place around 10 a.m. Saturday morning. This neighbor said her husband saw the teen before the shooting happened.

"The young man had passed our yard. While he was standing outside, he asked my husband for a cigarette. My husband said, 'I don't smoke." He just kept on going down the street and that's when he went to the young lady's house," said the woman.

The police department said an officer that arrived on scene put a tourniquet on the victim.

News19 was able to speak with the daughter of the victim and she said that she's doing okay at this time and is in stable condition at the hospital.

Although her neighbor is okay and the suspect has been arrested, she says she's still worried about walking around her community.

"As for me, I'm used to sitting outside. This accident right here has me wondering should I still sit outside my door. It gives you something to think about now. Is it safe to sit outside this door," asked the neighbor.

The Columbia Police Department says Brown is being charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon in a violent crime. They expect Brown to be tried as an adult.
