Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Department of Health and Environmental Control has issued a swimming advisory for a section of the Saluda River.

DHEC said that higher than normal bacteria levels have been detected in the section of the river that runs by Saluda Shoals Park. Swimming is not advised in this area until the bacteria levels return to normal.

Activities that involve going underwater or where the possibility of swallowing water should be avoided. Anyone with open cuts or wounds should not come in contact with the water.

DHEC will place temporary signs along the area the swimming advisory is issued, until bacteria levels are back at a safe level.
