Person identified in fatal shooting incident in car in Irmo

An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the head, there does not appear to be any foul play involved at this time.

IRMO, S.C. — Irmo Police are investigating a shooting that happened in the 180 block of Old Dutch Fork Road in Irmo around 3 p.m. 

According to Captain Courtney Dennis, officers responded to a shooting involving a passenger inside of a vehicle. The passenger, according to police has died. 

The Richland County coroner's office is now involved with the investigation. 

Currently part of Old Dutch Fork Road is shut down as officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.  There were others inside the vehicle who are cooperating with investigators.  

Corey E. Hunt, 18, from Chapin, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS and taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital where he died at 3:36 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing. However, there does not appear to be any foul play involved at this time.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office, SLED and the Irmo Police Department are investigating the incident.

The Irmo Police have asked SLED to assist with the crime scene processing to help collect evidence and information to help understand what happened inside the vehicle.  There is no search underway for anyone else at this time and no threat to the surrounding area.  

According to law enforcement the incident was contained to the vehicle.
