Gilbert, SC (WLTX) – Residents are fed up with smoke pouring into their homes over the last few nights because of a controlled burn in Gilbert.
“It ran us out the house Wednesday night. We went and got a hotel room that is definitely expensive, we can’t afford it every night,” Destiny Hall explained.
Hall said she feels trapped in her home. She lives right near where the controlled burn took place.
“We stayed in our house last night. We actually ended up having to put blankets in the windows. We had to close off all the vents. We had to put the dogs and my child in the room with us. We had to put blankets under the doors,” Hall said. “The whole house was smoked out.”
The controlled burn took place at the intersection Two Notch and Blackthorn Drive in Gilbert Wednesday but the smoke is still around.
She said her daughter got so sick that she had to stay home from school Thursday.
“It’s just killing me and I don’t know how much longer I can deal with us,” she said.
On top of that, she is eight months pregnant and said she is scared about how the smoke affecting her baby.
“It was hard to breathe,” Todd Wallace said. “It stunk to high heaven.”
Wallace also lives nearby and has had trouble too.
“I have an 18-month-old who was having trouble breathing and was coughing all night,” he explained.
He said he also has a 4-year-old that has migraines that lead to mimicking seizures.
According to Jonathan Calore with the South Carolina Forestry Commission, the owner of the land where the controlled burn was did everything they were supposed to burn the area Wednesday.
The neighbors said legal or not, the smoke that’s been left behind is hurting them.
“If you would’ve gave us fair warning, if you’d have given us a heads up, I wouldn’t be as angry even an apology right about now would be nice,” Wallace said.
WLTX has tried to reach the person Wallace said police said is responsible for the burn but have not heard back.
We have also filed a FOIA request with the South Carolina Forestry Commission to see who is responsible, as soon as we hear back we will be sure to pass that information along to you.
