Rev. Billy Graham Held Two Crusades Here in Columbia

Once was in 1950, while the other time was in 1987.

The Rev. Billy Graham was known for his crusades made around the world in his over seven decades of spreading the gospel.

But on two occasions, those crusades stopped right here in Columbia, South Carolina.

The crusades were large, multi-day events with sermons and rallies in a specific region.

The first in Columbia was back in 1950, from February 19 to March 12 of that year. He was in the area for about three weeks, and with most of his sermons being made at the Township Auditorium. He also held one large event what was then Carolina Stadium, but is now Williams-Brice Stadium.

It's estimated he evangelized to over 180,000 people during that time.

He made other stops in the following weeks at smaller rallies in Sumter and Newberry, as well as events throughout the Upstate.

Thirty-seven years later after his first crusade, he went back South Carolina's capital in 1987. This time he was once again at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Graham held events from April 25 to May 2 here during that visit, with nearly 300,000 people hearing his message.

Graham had one other crusade in South Carolina, up in Greenville, in 1966.

These were far from his only stops in the Palmetto State, however. He would also hold smaller rallies in Columbia, including in 1958 and 1960, and spoke at the University of South Carolina's commencement in 1986. He also came to the state when Hurricane Hugo devastated the coast and the interior of South Carolina in 1989.
