Richland County, SC (WLTX) - A Richland Northeast High School student has been arrested after deputies say he sent disturbing messages to some of his fellow classmates.

The 14-year-old is charged with multiple counts of unlawful communication, a misdemeanor. He was taken into custody around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Richland County investigators said they determined that he threatened students using a fake profile account. Officers say leads from the community helped them make the arrest.

Parents had told News19 that their children had received the messages through an app on their school issued laptop. In one case, the parent said the person threatened to kidnap her child.

One of the victims said that she felt unsafe even being in her own home. Another parent said the person sent a picture of their home to their child to show they know where they lived.

Investigators are currently following up on more information and additional charges may be forthcoming. Sheriff Leon Lott stated that the juvenile will later be released to a parent or guardian.
