Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A Columbia favorite will reopen after being destroyed in the October 2015 flood. Sakura Japanese Restaurant, previously in Forest Acres, has relocated to Rosewood Drive.
The restaurant's home for 30 years now sits gutted after getting hit hard by flood waters.
"I got flooded almost 10 feet," said the owner, Norio Saito.
Saito says after seeing the extensive damage, he thought he would just call it quits.
"Yea I'm pretty old, I'm retirement age, so in the beginning I just retired," Saito said.
Saito says that changed when he saw how much his beloved restaurant was missed. A GoFundMe page created by a former employee raised over $9000.
"Lots of customers supported me, that's why I decided I'd reopen," Saito said.
The restaurant is now located on Rosewood Drive, in what was previously Fujiya. Saito says it was given a complete makeover and can't wait for his old and new customers to see it.
"This is my kind of dream, you know," Saito said. "That's why I'm happy, I think maybe the customers are happy too."
Saito says he hopes to have the finishing touches done by the end of July, and hopes to reopen by August.
