Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn is calling for longtime Michigan Representative John Conyers to step down.
On Thursday Clyburn said it would be in the best interest of Conyers to resign, while both House Minority and Majority Leaders also called for the Michigan Representative to step aside.
"I pray for Congressman Conyers and his family and wish them well. However, Congressman Conyers should resign,” Nancy Pelosi said.
“I think he should resign. I think he should resign immediately,” said Paul Ryan.
A day earlier, Clyburn and Louisiana Representative Cedric Richmond were asked about the sexual harassment allegations against Michigan Representative John Conyers Wednesday.
"You guys can appreciate other men in other industries have faced similar accusations and gotten out of the way, resigned, stepped down far faster than he (Conyers) has right?” a reporter asked.
“I don't know. You'll have to give us some examples,” Richmond said.
A group of reporters responded by naming Harvey Weinstein, Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer.
“Who elected them?” Clyburn replied.
Before the elevator doors, which the two Congressmen were on, closed as a reporter said, “So it’s different because he is elected.”
The doors closed before the Congressmen were able to respond.
Meanwhile, Conyers attorney Arnold Reed questioned why Pelosi has not spoken about Minnesota Senator Al Franken who admitted to at least one instance of sexual harassment alleged against him.
"At the end of the day I would suspect that Nancy Pelosi is going to have to explain what is the discernable difference between Al Franken and John Conyers," Reed said.
Conyers son was also interviewed and says that if the allegations are true, he deserves whatever punishment may come, but also stands by his father.
"I think it's very unfortunate to see him fight so long, for so many people and to automatically have the allegations assumed true,” he said.
While Conyers has not resigned, he has given up his leadership position on the House Judiciary Committee. Conyers was recently hospitalized after experiencing dizziness.
