SCDOT proposes Blossom Bridge Project, to replace the overpass

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One bridge in downtown Columbia is in the early phases of being replaced by the department of transportation.

The bridge located between Huger Street and Gadsden Street over the Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation Railroads.

The project manager for the Blossom Bridge Project, Joey McIntyre said currently it does not meet design standards and is nearing its life cycle.

It will still have four lanes two in each direction, but they hope to add sidewalks to make it more pedestrian friendly.

"That is something both USC and the City of Columbia have showed strong interest in, so were trying our best that we can accommodate that," McIntyre said. "We are looking really hard to add sidewalks in both direction so that would be a huge benefit to foot traffic in the area."

Right now the project is still in the environmental review phase and the SCDOT is conducting a traffic analysis.

Construction on the bridge is not expected to begin until 2023 or 2024
