A Spartanburg County woman died Saturday afternoon while scuba diving in Lake Keowee near the Oconee Nuclear Station.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis identified the victim as Angelia Marie Dover, 43, of Boiling Springs.
Dover was diving with a male companion and two other people at a depth of 50 to 55 feet when she panicked and attempted to surface before disappearing, Addis said.
Oconee County officials received a 911 call about the incident about 4:50 p.m. Saturday. Members of the Oconee County Dive Team found Dover at a depth of 55 feet at 5:13 p.m. She was taken to GHS-Oconee Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:07 p.m., Addis said.
Addis said an autopsy will be performed Monday to assist in the death investigation.
In addition to the dive team, personnel from three county fire stations, the Oconee County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources responded to the incident, according to Oconee County Fire Chief Charlie King.
King said the portion of the lake near the Oconee Nuclear Station is a well-known site for swimmer and divers.
