A Sumter woman was by hit by a car and killed while walking on a Sumter roadway early Thursday morning, according to the Sumter Police Department.

Berlese Botwe, 41, was walking on South Pike West when she was struck by a Nissan Maxima at about 3:20 a.m. Thursday morning, according to investigators. Police say Botwe was not visible to the driver, who was on her way to work at the time.

Police say they are continuing to investigate, but no charges are expected.
