The driver reportedly died on scene after the car hit an embankment, and caught on fire.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A single-vehicle collision left one person dead Friday night.

Troopers say a 2002 Cadillac Escalade veered off the side of the road when attempting to exit towards Clemson Road on US-1 north around 11:45 p.m.

The driver, tentatively identified as 16-year-old James Lawrence Jefferson, reportedly died on scene after the car struck a guardrail and caught on fire.

Asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation was named the cause of death, according to the Richland County Coroner's Office.
