Tractor Trailer Accident Shuts Down Part of Garners Ferry Road, HAZMAT Crews on Scene

A section of Garners Ferry Road is closed while HAZMAT crews work to mitigate a chemical leak after a tractor trailer and a box truck crashed Monday morning.

Richland County, SC (WLTX) — A section of Garners Ferry Road is closed while HAZMAT crews work to mitigate a chemical leak after a tractor trailer and a box truck crashed Monday morning.

A crash Garners Ferry Road/US-378 near Rabbit Run in the Lower Richland area has one lane blocked and is causing significant traffic delays in the area.

Lance Cpl. David Jones with S.C. Highway Patrol says the westbound lane of Garners Ferry Road near Rabbit Run is closed while crews work to contain and chemical leak and clear and the accident.

Chief Aubrey Jenkins with the Columbia Fire Department say crews discovered a 'corrosive product' leaking from 55-gallon drums in the tractor trailer, and crews are working to mitigate the leak. DHEC is on the scene and working with Columbia Fire to contain the scene. Jenkins says nearby residents need not be worried.

Jenkins says traffic from Columbia to Sumter is moving. However, the road from Sumter coming into Columbia is blocked and drivers are advised to take another route.

One person was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, officials say.

In addition to the main accident, several accidents have been been reported in traffic surrounding the area.
