Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Tropical Storm Gert formed in the Atlantic Ocean late Sunday afternoon. The storm is not a threat to the United States.
The National Hurricane Center said late Sunday Gert was centered about 485 miles west-southwest of Bermuda. Gert had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and gusts up to 60 mph.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward to about 90 miles northwest from the center of circulation.
The storm is moving toward the north-northwest at 9 mph. Slow strengthening is expected through Tuesday. The storm could become a hurricane before weakening.
The storm will turn towards the northeast Monday. It is not a threat to the United States.
