Tropical Storm Maria Forms in Atlantic, 3 Storms Currently Out There

Tropical Storm Maria formed in the deep Atlantic.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- A new tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic, bringing to three the number of named systems currently churning out there.

Late Saturday afternoon, Tropical Storm Maria had winds of 50 miles an hour, with gusts of 65 miles an hour.

More strengthening is forecast. If the current track holds, would take it over Puerto Rico and just off Hispaniola. Longer range models suggest it could track near the U.S. East Coast, so this system will require further monitoring.

Meanwhile, further out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Lee formed early Saturday. It had winds speeds of 40 miles an hour.

The storm is not expected to strengthen over the next two days. There are no warnings or watches associated with Tropical Storm Lee, and current forecast models don't have it approaching the U.S. at this time.

And finally, Hurricane Jose is still moving through the Atlantic. The Category 1 hurricane is moving north. The storm had winds of 80 mph.

There are currently not watches or warnings in effect with Jose, but interests from North Carolina to New England should monitor the storm.

For South Carolina, the storm was only a risk for causing rip current along the coast.
