Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Several colleges in the Midlands have decided to cancel classes beginning Wednesday because of the impending threat of Hurricane Matthew.

University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides said the school will be closed on Wednesday, and may shut down on Thursday and Friday as well.

Claflin University and South Carolina State University have also closed down, and say they will not be open through Friday. South Carolina State also said their football game against SC State will be rescheduled.

Midlands Tech says it will close all of its campuses for Wednesday, but has not made a decision about the rest of the week.

Matthew is expected to strike the state Friday. Governor Nikki Haley has ordered a coastal evacuation that's expected to affect up to 1.1. million residents. She called for 26 school districts to shut down, including many in the Midlands to ease congestion on the roads while people use the interstates to flee the coast.
