Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Columbia Fire Department says one person died saving his wife during a condominium fire early Saturday morning.

Witnesses reportedly told officials someone was still inside when they arrived at the Point Arcadia condominium complex on Cleaton Road around 7 a.m.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said the victim went back into the complex to wake his wife after noticing she wasn't outside.

"He is her hero," Jenkins said. "We don't advocate anybody going back inside of a burning structure, but you don't know what a person might think or do in those types of situations."

She didn't realize her husband was still inside until making it to safety.

"He actually saw that she wasn't out, went back in, and she said he actually woke her up, but he never made it out," Jenkins added,

Crews were unable to conduct an initial search because the flames were too dangerous, according to Jenkins.

Officials say a total of six individuals have been displaced after three condominiums suffered significant damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
