Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Over 20 organizations in the Midlands joined together to create the "Columbia Stands with Charlottesville" rally at the State House on Monday.

Organizers say they wanted to send a message that the ideals of hatred and a superior race aren't welcome in this community.

"Our country is not just for white people, it never has been, it never should be," said Julie Edwards, one of the organizers.

"I want to do everything I can to make sure that doesn't happen here," said Allison Terracio, another organizer.

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin says it's a darkness that resonates with people all over the nation.

"When you see acts of violence, when you hear harmful words, when you hear words of hatred, bigotry you've got to be gravely concerned," Benjamin said.

But, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.

"We are the greatest democratic nation in the history of the world," Benjamin said. "We can do it if we do it together."
