SCOTLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WRAL) — A Scotland County deputy was killed March 1 in a crash while he was en route to help another deputy, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Alexis Locklear, 24, was driving down Old Wire Road, west of Wagram, at about 7:20 p.m. when he crashed.

According to Sheriff Ralph Kersey, Locklear was responding to assist another officer who was actively pursuing a suspect in a vehicle chase.

Locklear was sworn in May 2017. He leaves behind a 4-year-old child.
