West Columbia, SC (WLTX)– Our News 19 Teacher of the Week could barely hold back the tears when we surprised her during class at B C Grammar No. 1 in West Columbia.

"This is such an honor. Such an honor. Oh gosh!...” said Kathryn Meetze, a fourth-grade teacher, crying. “I just feel extremely overwhelmed and excited, I don't know if I'm going to be able to process all of this for a few days (crying) these kids are amazing and I love doing what I'm doing.”

The parent who nominated her, Rochelle Elliott, calls Mrs. Meetze an angel.

“Trinidi is a child that needed the extra loving and care. And I gave her all of that but when she got with Mrs. Meetze, I could see a butterfly in the action of being born,” said Elliott. “She was the angel sent from God.”

Elliott says her daughter used to have behavior problems until a reality check in Mrs. Meetze’s class.

"She's very misunderstood. And I didn't let any of her excuses for ‘I'm not good at this’ or ‘I can't do this or I'm not sure’ stop her. I knew that she could do it,” said Meetze.

Now, Trinidi is in the sixth-grade, taking advanced classes.

“I know that by being with Mrs. Meetze, it gave her the confidence to say "I know I need better, I know I can do better,” said Elliott.

Mrs. Meetze is the President of the Parent Teacher Organization and B C Grammar’s Principal of the Year.
